Clearing 717,000 dead tasks from the work queues
A national debt buyer and legal-collections servicer.
The problem
The servicing system creates a task for each piece of work. Over the years it piled up duplicate copies, tasks for retired codes, tasks on closed accounts and tasks that failed with a system error. Staff couldn't see the real work in their queues. Tasks also sat with former employees.
What we built
- A read-only census of every open task, grouped by why it existed and whether anyone could work it.
- A cancel tool for each group, with rules the operations owner signed off.
- A saved before-image of every task before any change, and one-command rollback for 10 days.
- A guard so no account ends up with zero open tasks.
- A sweep that moves tasks from departed staff to the right team queue.
