Recovering data lost in a system conversion
A national debt buyer and legal-collections servicer.
The problem
The client moved from a legacy collections system to a new servicing platform. The conversion left gaps. About 151,000 accounts had no date for when they went to a law firm. About 2,900 accounts had a filing fee on the books but no suit record. About 800 suits had a court name the platform couldn't match. Ten years of cash history sat outside the new platform.
What we built
- Read 10 years of legacy law-firm exchange files (EDI) and matched each forwarding record to its account.
- Rebuilt missing suit records from the law firms' own status files, with a confidence tier for each match. Only high-confidence matches went in automatically.
- Added 144 court names to the court lookup, and rebuilt suits with the matched court.
- Wrote the rebuilt suits into the servicing platform without creating staff tasks. A test run on a copy came first.
- Joined legacy cash receipts with new-platform cash in one table for reporting.
Results
- 150,956 forwarding dates restored, from 2012 to 2022 history.
- 1,377 missing suit records rebuilt in production, with 0 errors and 0 staff tasks created.
- 277 of 277 rebuilt suits matched the expected court.
- $646,903 of filing fees found on accounts with no suit record, and traced to 33 firms.
- 953,000 legacy receipts ($240M) in one table with new-platform cash.
